Well, I can only now begin to absorb my visit to the VAG to take in something of the creative world of Douglas Copeland in all its diversity and complexity , its modernity and historical significance but above all its pure essence of creative joy and amusement found all in one place at one time . [ Perhaps Douglas Copeland's next endeavour might be to launch a perfume brand for artists - I think the ad could label it " pure essence of creative joy" - I would buy a case] .
As someone still grappling with how to bring my creative dreams to life , Douglas Copeland's retrospective is truly inspiring . I have seen only a very small number of his works before this show but now I think this is the best way to grasp the creative soul of an individual artist - together his works say so much more to me than any one work on its own. [ This leads me to re-think the idea that searching for a venue and an opportunity to have a one-person exhibition or show is going to be so much more powerful than one- off things - and also perhaps more rewarding ..... it says to the viewer- this is who I am and just as you cannot judge a book by one cover , you cannot understand me as an artist or what I am saying , by just one work. So, what do you think I am saying by all of this ? ]
I was surprised by many things and I hope the catalogue will capture them all. One of my "moments" where I was stopped in my tracks was his room of large colour abstract works created from favourite works by such Canadian artists as the Group of Seven and Emily Carr. [ These may be my favourites from the exhibit ... I would like the catalogue simply to meditate on his chosen colours and variety of lines of energy and calm in these works ].....
Of course , I couldn't leave without contributing to Gumhead and now I can say I contributed to an installation by this creative guy [ I tickled his nose and tweaked an ear].
