The picture above is Lucy the day I brought her into my life ....... EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE AN ART CRITIC TO HANG OUT WITH IN THE STUDIO . LUCY IS MY ART CRITIC AND MY PERSON.....
Lucy 's Birthday - Happy 5 Lucy - 2023
Lucy's Birthday - March 6 , 2022
Lucy is 4 years old . She has lived in isolation with me for 1/2 her life - during this pandemic. She has stuck by me during a year of recovery after brain surgery . She has kept me laughing and has brought me great joy . She especially loves to be outside with me in the yard and garden , helping me move the wheelbarrow or digging weeds or picking strawberries. She believes she must help me with everything . I have learned to deal with her stubborn side..... like getting her to move over on the bed at night or her antics to avoid having her face washed after she covers herself in dirt in the garden. She has her own routines and I understand them as much as she understands mine . Together, we are doing just fine.
Merry Christmas 2018, Happy Holidays & Wishing you a Quiet Joy this December
Lucy posing with her serious face ..... she still is camera shy.
Lucy asleep on the loveseat after Christmas breakfast..... Remind you of any of your relatives at this time of year?...... Notice how long she is has gotten..... when she stretches out beside me she is almost as tall as I am ....
Naptime .... dreaming of that Christmas bone that is coming for dinner ....
Its November & Lucy is 8 months old - Of Hormones, Hot dogs and Houses
Just look at my 8 month old beauty ..... posed in her favourite sitting place where she can watch the world outside while still keeping track of me while I work in the kitchen or putter around . It has been a stressful month and a bit for sure for both Lucy and for me ...... I was unable to get Lucy in for spaying right at 6 months and she decided to surprise me with an early hormonal change- so awful for her and for me ....but we have weathered the drama with lots of cuddles, understanding and cool washes for a hot dog ..... and she has come through .... and she is booked for the end of December.....
My cottage was invaded by potential buyers , looky-loos , repairmen, painters, and the like but open houses are over and buyers are in place so we are now waiting for all the subjects to come off and close the contract.
So Lucy and I will soon be homeless.... we are in the beginning of a new adventure to find ourselves our new home and art studio ..... stay tuned.

Here is Lucy on her 8th birthday enjoying an apple . She loves apples and hides them like she hides a favourite bone . It started when the green apples from the old apple tree in the backyard started falling from the trees... quite bitter really but she took a liking to them right from the start . So, now I buy her apples for a treat . Interestingly a number of dog snacks have apple in them ..... who knew. She likes plain organic yogurt too .... otherwise her favourite treat is Kangaroo bark.
She has learned that she can only eat her apples on the back deck or on her own bed [ washable] .... a very smart puppy.. although sometimes she tries to roll the apple off on to the carpet and stretch out so that she is on the bed and the apple is on the carpet ..... its a bit of a game I think to see if I can catch her stretching the rules... It seems so amazing to me that she understands what she is doing when she tests me ...
Lucy hasn't barked very much in her short time on this earth but she has taken to barking at the squirrels collecting food and travelling through the trees in the front yard..... her bark sounds like a VERY BIG DOG ....Here she is at this new pastime ..... There is also just one dog that annoys her of all the dogs on their daily walks and she barks at this one particular dog .... ???
I think I am glad she has such a big bark ..... it makes me feel protected even though she loves everybody and shows it .....
Its September and Lucy is 6 months old - look out world - here I come
Lucy will graduate from her first puppy classes this week. She can sit , and lay down , and shake a paw. She can come [ almost always]....... and stay . She knows what nap time means and time out [ when she tries to chew on something she should not ]....... but I don't seem to be winning with leash training ....... especially in highly social situations ..... she seems to have lapsed into a kind of teenager " I'm not listening to you right now" mentality ...... and she is getting so big that this will have to take some concentrated energy on my part .... she still jumps on visitors coming into the house and this too will need some extra effort on my part....
But she is a beautiful girl and such a cuddler........ she gets annoyed when my attention is taken up on the phone or with another person ...... this is new in the last couple of weeks .... so much to learn about boxers .... Here are a few things from her 6 month adventures ...

Lucy is contemplating life in the sunshine - on the one couch she was not to get up on..... she followed these rules until the day she turned 6 months old- now all hell is breaking loose .... but here she is quiet and dreamy
Things Lucy loves to eatLucy loves to eat the apples off the old apple tree in the backyard - even the ones that haven't ripened yet ....
|
Here she is tearing through the roots of various potted plants that were in that pot behind her.... when things get quiet in the yard... its time to check out what she is up to
|
Lucy LOVES swiss chard ..... she really loved the stuff she could pull out my big planters... I wouldn't know - I didn't get a chance to eat any this summer
|
Sock monster; creative sleeper and curiosity seeker
She will find them wherever they may be - in the closet, in a laundry pile while doing laundry , and yes, even in a dresser drawer ... case in point see below - Lucy LOVES socks- thick ones, cotton ones, wool , hiking socks, dress socks ..... just give her a sock and she is a happy camper ...... I tried to get her to just like her VERY OWN sock when she was a baby ,,,, but NO, this is her thing...... Below she manages to open the dresser to search out socks; in the next picture she is hiding a treasure of some sort - and below , she contorts her flexible frame to try and dig out something she has previous hidden away for a rainy day - I just hope its not one of those apples from the garden......
Lucy is a creative sleeper - she especially finds herself falling asleep while standing on the couch looking out the window or searching for something ... suddenly, the eyes droop and she is gone to the world ....
Adventures at 6 months are never-ending
August 6 - Lucy is 5 months old
Lucy just turned 5 months old . I like her at this age. We are beginning to understand each other. We have a routine [ mostly]. She is a really sweet puppy . She loves everyone and every dog and is pretty well socialized ....
I have a lot to learn about boxers - I am constantly amazed at how quickly she learns and how I have to get things right before she learns bad habits. So, we started puppy school with Derrick as trainer at Petsmart for the next 6 weeks. And we had our first class and I hope I didn't embarrass Lucy too much . She loves it..... We were both exhausted - she retired to snore in the bathroom on the cool bathroom tiles and I had a class of wine ...... now to work on homework for next class.
I feel like a bad person - Lucy got stung by a hornet on her ear and she cried and cried.... I put a little Benydryl spray on it because I knew she couldn't lick it but I realized I have to figure out what to use for such things ..... bites and cuts and the like ........ A friend reminded me I need an emergency kit for her to put alongside my own emergency kit........ so many things to think about ....
She has had all her shots now and is growing like crazy ..... these pictures attest to that... grown out of her little puppy bed ....... out of her puppy collar........ but not yet meeting the size of her paws...... here are some more pictures of her latest adventures

Lucy loves the garden . In the garden I HAD lots of pieces of old driftwood . Lucy LOVES these big sticks . Now she is a bigger dog [ her legs go on forever], she is forever bringing these sticks into the house ...... here she is bringing one down into the studio .......
Big dogs need bigger bones . Lucy has almost all of her big dog teeth now but chewing is still a big part of daily activities. Now I am buying the bigger raw chewy bones from "In the Raw" ..... You can see she is licking her lips as she decides how to tackle this one .......
Lucy is pretty comfortable now in the domain of her backyard.
As you can see, Lucy has mostly outgrown her puppy bed but she still hangs out by the bed, hides her favourite bones and toys in the bed, and makes sure Bear is close by . Here she is zonked out .... so I can take a picture of her..... Mostly she doesn't smile when I get the camera out.... she doesn't really care for the camera but tolerates it .....
Lucy is very annoyed with me in this picture...Why? Because she was hiding a bone and now she is going to have to move it to another hiding place just to be sure it is hidden .......
July , 2018 - Lucy 4.5 months: Playdate with Lucy's sister Penny; and in love with Bear
It has been an exciting few weeks. Lucy is growing faster than my zucchini.... At 23 pounds , fitting her on my lap is getting to be a challenge.... she is funny and fun and stubborn .... she definitely understands what I am saying but gives me big soggy eyes when she pretends to ignore me....
I don't know who was more excited to welcome her sister Penny and Penny's owner Patti and her brother Peter , to a playdate in our backyard. It was a boxer crazy reunion . Penny came to Vancouver with Lucy at the same time . She lives in Deep Cove so we knew we had to get them together . Penny is SO much bigger than Lucy but I think they recognized each other very quickly . Watching them roll over each other and play together was really a joy for all of us .... Here are a few pictures [ I was so excited I hardly took any pictures]:

In the first pic, Penny is in front and Lucy in back. Note their smiley faces. On the right , Penny is playing with Lucy's blue ball. They played, and played AND PLAYED SOME MORE.
After Penny went home, Lucy attached herself to Black Bear, a stuffy , furry black bear like the ones we have here on the North Shore. She dragged Bear upstairs from the art studio where Bear generally sleeps, and tucked Bear into her blue bed. Lucy has been dragging Bear everywhere with her [ except I won't let her go outside with Bear] ..... Here are some pics of Lucy with Bear :

Lucy loves Bear |
Lucy gently tucks Bear into bed before she goes to bed herself. It is so sweet I don't know what to think about it but Lucy is a fascinating creature to have in my life. Stay tuned- manners classes start in early August ... this should be interesting....
Lucy is 4 months old - Sticks and bones and naps [ July 6]
Considering how much Lucy hates the rain and cold damp ground I am grateful to have brought her home in the summertime so we can evaluate strategies for getting a stubborn puppy outside and under the trees in the backyard to do her " business" in early morning rain but things are going so well ...
Lucy is so smart .... and she is beginning to show her intelligence in so many ways .... she is getting most of of my communications - OFF, LEAVE IT[ a hard one for a curious puppy], SIT [ easy ], DOWN [ coming along], IN THE CAR [maybe , if she wants to go out, not so much if we are coming home from a walk], GO PEE [ yes, yes, yes]...... and NO [ this still seems to be confusing ]..... WALK? BEDTIME, KISSES.....
In early August we will begin classes for manners [ very difficult for me to control her urges on walks when she meets other people and dogs .... so I will need some help in getting her manners on and off leash to be acceptable ]....
Right now it is fun to watch her creative hiding of chewy bones, how she shares things with me ... how she is communicating with me so I can understand her ]......
I am enjoying her companionship and all the challenges that go with a young puppy......I am told she is entering teenager status now ... what can that mean? See pics below of Lucy at 4 months

Lucy's legs go forever as you can see and like a deer, she is now able to quite easily climb onto couches, chairs ,etc..... so now she has expanded the scope of places where she can hide her chewy bones and this exercise can keep her occupied for some period of time . In the second picture, not only did she place her bone on the back of the chair but she dragged a pillow from the other couch to put in front of the bone to better hide it from seeing eyes...... this seems to be a thinking exercise that surprises me immensely ..... and yes, there are places she is not allowed to jump up on.... so far she has respected these off-limit areas.
Look what I found...... I often have various interesting shaped tree branches in my garden .... Lucy has decided this is now her stick to chew on and drags it around the yard with her . She gets very excited when she finds something of interest to her in the yard ...... and she is taking command of the yard as she gains confidence in her environment .
Places to nap |
Lucy weighs almost 20 pounds now [ 9.9 kg]. She is still all loose skin and ribs and legs that go forever and the size of her paws still draw comments from everyone who meets her. She continues to want to sit on my lap but that is becoming a challenge so cuddling takes place on the couch , rug, etc.
She got her name tag this week, and we are working with a new leash [ challenging as she seems to be in-between sizes ].... Things she loves : Playing with the water hose in the backyard; walks; meeting other dogs like Charlie; turkey tendons, wild chew bones; her raw food and especially beef tripe; hanging out in the garden; cuddling while watching Blue Jay games; and in the early morning ....getting a wash down with a hot cloth at night or a face wash after eating. |
Lucy- 15 weeks old - Bath time, toy time & chew time
The above image is Lucy at 15 weeks old. It shows a bit of her attitude .... one ear is flopped back and she is about to go into crazy mode .... early morning after breakfast play she we haven't gone for a walk yet. She is saying come on, let's get going here .... its a new day , no time to waste.
I admit, I have a few frazzled days ... especially last week when it got SO HOT and Lucy was as cranky as I was. We chewed on ice cubes and retreated to the art studio where it is cooler during the day.
We are both learning to walk together on the leash so we can enjoy the trails . We are both adjusting our schedules to accommodate the other's needs..... Lucy is not a morning puppy whereas I like to be up with the early light of day . I have to make sure she gets her puppy naps on a routine time basis or she starts to bite my ankles. [ We've almost cured that ]...
And so it goes..... Lucy had her first bathtub bath ...... she likes the water .... here she is in the bathroom - helping ....

Lucy in her toy basket
Lucy likes to take everything out of her toy basket , sometimes one by one and sometimes by dumping the whole basket out and rummaging through everything. This is especially fun in the evening before bedtime when she is calming down from her day and wants to check out her toys.
What can I chew now ?
There is no getting away from it. Lucy wants to put EVERYTHING in her mouth - taste it, feel it , discover it . She is a true creative experimental creature .... After all shouldn't life be about discovery ? I think there is a lesson in this for all of us. Interesting that she likes certain feel of things - she likes plant roots more than the plant greens; she likes flannel .... soft things but she loves the roughness of garden gloves too..... We are working on the NO and OFF commands and they are beginning to work ..... but we also name things as Lucy's sock or Lucy's glove and that seems to be having some success too..... Here is a sample of chewing things over the last few days
Grumpy girl face---- not wanting to get up in the morning ....
A few weeks ago Lucy only wobbled on her little pudgy legs. Now she looks like a young deer with legs that go on forever. She can easily get on her couch, or lawn chair and can put her paws on the bathroom counter when she stands on her hind legs...... Here she naps after a great walk outdoors..... Some days I feel how she looks here .... but she is a charmer and she has captured my heart .... More to come.
Lucy - 12 weeks old - Helping in the garden, boxer crazy, and art photo [ to June 7]
This was taken on Lucy's 12 week birthday after Lucy devoured the lettuce in our very small greens garden. Note the lovely black dirt on her chin... She seems to be growing into all that loose skin faster very day...
It is fair to say that Lucy has enjoyed the backyard immensely . She has tasted almost everything - and since I have a lot of herbs, she smells quite lovely most days. From lemon balm to chocolate mint, it has been an adventure. So I realized very early on, I couldn't really explain to her that the lovely lettuce leaves were off limits... it seemed too much like a game to her and it is on me that one leaf is chewable and another is not. Far too complicated for a puppy... so I will just have to buy my greens from Loutet Gardens down the road for this summer and see whether I can be more successful next year....
Lucy is quickly growing out of her puppy bed ....
Lucy- 11 weeks old - The shoe caper & settling in to her role as art critic - [ to May 29]
Lucy is 11 weeks old in this update. Her legs have totally outgrown her body and she looks more like a young deer than a puppy. She also looks like a boxer now, as her puppy fat has quickly disappeared. I began a new painting this week .... trying to see how and when we might tackle a little work in the studio . Lucy is very interested in my canvas and , when she stands on her back legs, her front paws can reach the surface of the canvas..... we will have to deal with this eventually. Perhaps I will have to give her some recognition in my finished work ?
She likes to look at the work from all angles.... but eventually it got a bit boring for her and she curled up on the step close to me in the sunshine and took a nap.
PS... I have also discovered that puppy pee pads work exceptionally well in the studio [ Lucy is standing on one in the middle picture].

Lucy has adopted a Jane Goodall stuffed gorilla . She is very protective of it and takes it with her around the house. I think she likes to cuddle with her as well.
The Shoe caper - Things happen so fast around a puppy. Until this week I had managed to keep no-no's away from Lucy's very sharp and ever-chewing teeth. I discovered however that my runners are a big issue because they have laces and while walking today with her she would not focus on anything but my shoe laces. Needless to say, this was a challenge I seemed to lose for the moment. While taking my shoes off, she managed to commandeer one and tried telling me that possession was 9/10ths of the law. She is beginning to show me that " full of beans" attitude that Crystal, the breeder used to describe her . I do love that attitude... now I hope I am up to the challenge . I seem to be carrying a lot of diversionary stuff to give her to put in her mouth besides my ankles and toes.....
[The Joy of chewy bones - Puppies chew. There is no way of getting around it . Finding good things for Lucy to chew on is a full-time job. And I am learning as I go. The lovely and knowledgeable people at Lucy's food store [ In the Raw].... explained why soup bones are too hard for her puppy teeth. So, now I have some softer meaty bones from them that I cook in a beef broth for her. [ I also have some dry turkey chews she loves...]
What is fascinating to me is that 11 week old Lucy instinctively hides her bones . She doesn't hide her toys or other chews - like the sheep cartilage ears [ also softer to chew on ].... but from the moment she got her first bone, after chewing on it , she would go and hide it .
This provides endless amusement in the backyard as she searches out the right place to hide it , circles back to check on it to see if it is hidden well, and if not, brings it out and searches for a better place. And she always knows where it is.
Yesterday morning, she smelled something unusual on the back deck as we were heading out for her morning ...[ pee]. I knew it was a racoon because it had left muddy footprints on the deck. Lucy ripped down the steps and immediately ran for her bone, pulled it out and ran back up the steps and in the house with her bone. She seemed to say to me, " well that was a close call ... but its safe now"..... Here she is in the above picture with her bone.... keeping it inside for the day.

Lucy's Week 2 - The toilet paper caper & other exciting developments -[ to May 18 ]
How fast can a boxer puppy grow? Well in just two weeks she can grow to reach the toilet paper holder, grow to suddenly find herself stuck in places she could in and out of a week ago, grow to be able to tackle going downstairs as well as upstairs, and well, just gain in confidence with every new adventure .
Thank you to Vicki and Paul for her new favourite toy [ the soft blue ball ....].
Discoveries are so exciting - a cold ice cube; lemon balm in the garden; a new toy; and black bear - my stuffed toy in the art studio. Yesterday we went for a short walk at the edge of the forest . She stayed very close to me- I think she smelled new things that she wasn't so sure about. Its a joy to see the world through Lucy's eyes. See new photos from the week below.

I think I'm stuck .... Got out last week????
The toilet paper caper..... I was in the shower..... Lucy grew enough this week to reach ..... next? She gave me that " Who ... me? look . So cute.......
Lucy was a bit perturbed that Bear didn't want to play ....Lucy kept biting Bear's ears..... but no action ..... You can see how annoyed Lucy is over this ....
Hot day this week.... Lucy hanging out in her lounge chair.... and having a nap in the garden - finding cool shade
Lucy's new favourite toy - the soft blue ball..... thank you to Vicki and Paul..... she even had to have it while she took her nap..... now I think I need a nap too....
Mother's Day May 13th
I hope you can take a moment to send love to your mother whether she is here on earth or dancing with the angels.
This was our first week getting to know each other. It is a joyous adventure. It is amazing to me to be in the moment to watch a brand new creature discover this world we all share- the big black crows , the dogs barking in the neighbourhood and the very loud woodpeckers banging on the metal on the telephone posts. All new.
Already Lucy is turning into a little boxer. Her eyes turned colour this week - getting that beautiful brown . She feels twice as long to me when she climbs into my lap. She can scramble up the stairs from the back yard to the deck and yesterday she was determined to come down on her own. A little tricky but you could almost see the determination and then the smile on her face when she did it. Yes, it deserved a treat.
We have spent the last two days in the garden digging out weeds. [ Where did they come from].
Lucy really likes being outside and already has a few places in the shade she likes to lie down in. Playing with the water from the water hose was great fun. And she managed to pull an old garden glove out from the tool basket . The leather was especially good to chew on. [ She has managed not to chew on anything bad in the house.... but I am very quick to give her chews in the form of sheep cartilage [ ears] to chew on ....
We will visit the dog food store again today .....

Lucy at 9 weeks
May 9, 2018
Lucy turned 8 weeks old last Sunday . In less than one week, she has learned to wear a collar when we go out. The leash will take a bit more practice. She has learned to sit to accept a treat or before she eats . She very quickly learned how to climb up the front steps of the cottage. Going down will take a bit more time.
Lucy met Ralph, a Burmese mountain dog , when we went to the pet food store to buy chewies for her baby teething. She met some dogs at her first Vet appointment with Dr. Catherine. But, she was really excited to meet Laika, an amazing German Shepherd who very quickly took baby Lucy under her wing. I am looking forward to their adventures together.
May 4, 2018 -
Lucy's homecoming - A big day : Leaving home, mom and her people for the first 8 weeks of her life. Flying in an airplane and arriving on the west coast . Lucy handled it with confidence and spunk . She is a fancy girl , a boxer from Paridigm Boxers and she is so beautiful I cannot stop gushing over her .

Checking out the new digs
Trying hard to stay awake
Sleeping under the umbrella after some exercise and playtime around the yard. Put her collar on for a few minutes .
Lucy has already picked out her own lounge chair. I wonder how she'll she at weeding the garden?
Meet Lucy
Her temperament is described by Crystal, the breeder at Paridigm Boxers and owner of beautiful boxers, as " playful, mischievous and full of beans"..... the videos of her since birth seem to confirm all of these traits.
I will be bringing her home on Friday, May 4th . Can't wait!
