I just finished a fascinating read entitled " Cezanne" by Alex Danchev. The following are quotes from Cezanne or descriptions of Cezanne and his painting by others.... Please read the book .... it is a book for artists....
Cezanne:
"For if the keen sensation of nature - is the necessary basis for all artistic conception, knowledge of the means of expressing our emotion is no less essential, and is required only through very long experience. "

"Each part is as important as the whole"
" It is the brushstroke of the right value and colour which should produce the drawing"
" I must only strive for completion for the satisfaction of becoming truer and wiser"
" My project is to determine self- differentiation in my life, in this life. A felt sense of difference is a blessing, not a curse"
" The art of painting entails finding equivalents in mat
[ Note by me - Cezanne talked of being a Sensationist, not an impressionist.... he strived to capture the sensation of everything he painted.... From Delacroix's journal -
" The issue is what he [ Cezanne] saw- how he saw. " He never wanted to let the logic of the painting take precedence over the continuity of perception" argued John Berger: " after each brushstroke he had to re-establish his innocence as preceiver. Long fixation led to perceptual disintegration. After 1900, Gowling noted, " separable physical objects in Cezanne's work increasingly merge into the flux of colour"
Other comments on Cezanne-
" He set out to paint nature in its becoming"
" Cezanne's brush was loaded with emotion"
