Study # 1 - W&N ink on paper
Study # 2 Pen on Paper: Mexican roses
Line drawing is one of the most basic elements of visual art. Paul Klee said that " A line is a dot that went for a walk" - expressing movement from one point to another.
If only it were that simple. Line drawing has also been described as consisting of distinct lines against a primarily solid background. The main intent I think is to allow the focus to rest firmly on the lines themselves rather than on other elements such as shading or colour gradients. Many sketches are included in the definition of line art, but it also includes sophisticated finished artwork .
Google " Famous Line Drawings in Art History " and you will find some beauties to study - such as
" The Dance" - Henri Matisse
" Portrait of Igor Stravinsky" - Pablo Picasso
" Study for the head of Leda" - Leonardo da Vinci and
one of my favourites - " Lacoon and his Sons" - Vatican Museum , Rome
Jackson Pollock's No. 5 can also be included .
My Study # 1 -
This was the first time I have tried ink and I used Winsor & Newton black ink and various size brushes. I am fascinated with how the ink bends under the brush as it sinks on the paper. I realize that once it is laid down it is here to stay .
I began with basic pencil lines as I might do on a canvas
before I begin to paint. But when I hold the brush down to the paper my emotions take over completely and I feel the energy the movement of the brush creates.
I failed in my attempt to create the feeling of clouds but I feel I attained movement in the white space throughout and that there is a need for generous white space when creating with black lines.
Ink is unforgiving . I'm such a klutz. I managed to smear the ink not only on the paper but on myself as well....
My Study # 2
Smaller paper, softer weave. On this piece I took inspiration from a small bouquet of creamy white Mexican roses full of the most incredible perfume , it filled my studio with joy.

I used Micron pens for this study. I was reaching for the emotion of joy the roses brought me as I worked in the studio today. I tried for movement in simplicity .
About Lines:
Lines move your eye in and out of the picture plane. You can decide where you want the viewer to focus, stop, and examine your work by creating dynamic lines in play. Line is about creating directional energy, or evoking calm. Line is also about the expression of character- in trees and rocks and water and faces- in everything. But for me, most importantly, line is about making my own unique mark on the world that expresses who I am as an artist.
