Sometimes an artist residency is really an artist retreat... a place to escape to.... a place where you sit in the sun at 5 pm and listen to bird songs you have never ever heard before and you look at mountains with the sun setting that you have only seen for a few days.... and you close your eyes and you hear ..... quiet.... silence....... calm...... a hush over the world...... and your creative soul begins to ask yourself questions .... and you have the time to stop to listen .... because you have disconnected from all the hype and personal promotions, and instagrams boasting of an artist's latest show or accomplishment or award or whatever it is that is pushing us into some kind of weird virtual world where every artist appears to be a success ..... an artist retreat is a magnificent reward .... it makes you happy just being alive .... and not having to think about anything but the sweetness of the air ... and all the things that make being alive a reward in themselves .... perfection ...... a kind of creative fulfillment in itself..... and for just a moment ... all is right with the world .
